Innovating Missions becomes a Calling

When computers were first introduced over forty years ago, no one could have imagined the impact that technology would have on our everyday lives, much less the impact it would make in ministry and church development. For Michael and Jennifer Harris, technology and media are the foundation of their ministry.

Educating churches about how technology not only benefits their body of believers but also brings hope to the hurting in their communities. The Harris family is passionate about reaching the lost through this unique calling.

“In 2018, we knew God was stirring something in us,” says Michael. “We knew that a transition was coming, but we didn't have clear direction yet. As we prayed and dreamed, our answer was to serve the churches of Alabama the way we had been serving our local church.”

The Harrises explain that it wasn’t something they saw as a possibility when presented with the opportunity to become U.S. missionaries serving through Missionary Church Planters and Developers. With God’s help, they have come to believe that they truly are missionaries.

“People [who] churches can reach when using media and technology in an effective way—those people are our mission field!” says Jennifer. “The churches are our partners in reaching them.”

Through education and partnering with churches as it relates to technology and media, the Harris family has heard and seen numerous testimonies of people coming to know Christ and find a church community through social media as well as online search engines like Google.

COVID-19 has in many ways slowed down many ministry outlets, such as travel and face-to-face communication, but Jennifer and Michael have also seen a boost in ministry opportunities within media.

“[The COVID-19 pandemic] has flung the doors wide open for us to serve our churches,” says Jennifer. “We have been able to allow a church to borrow some of our equipment to help them stream and not incur any additional costs right now. We have been able to serve so many churches, both those who were already partnering with us, and those who had never heard of us. I think this VERY difficult season for our nation has honestly proved the need for our mission. This crisis has just reinforced God’s call on our lives and our passion for the mission He has called us to.”

Though not every ministry has had such positive results in the past few months, the Harrises hold to the promise that God keeps His promises and He is the same now as He was when they were first called into ministry.

“That call hasn't changed,” says Jennifer. “In fact, the need is likely greater now. Trust in the Lord. He called you to this; He will see you through it!”
