Breaking the Darkness

As U.S. Missions Intercultural Ministries missionary, Valarie Goff, walks into an illegal brothel to minister to the industry workers, she feels fearless. “I have no fear because I am rooted in the Holy Spirit. I am called to do this work.” Valarie has dedicated her life to bringing hope and healing to girls who work in the sex trade industry as F.R.E.E. International’s (Find, Restore, Embrace, Empower) Women’s Outreach Specialist in Houston, Texas. She and her team visit strip clubs and illegal brothels to bring gifts and pray for the workers. When asked what it feels like to enter a brothel, her expression turns grim. She says, “I’m walking into Satan’s territory. It’s such a dark environment and I feel the heaviness I am entering.” Once Valarie and her team get access to a brothel, they have a very short amount of time to make a connection. Sometimes, they don’t have the chance to see the girls and instead interact with management; where they have another opportunity to share the Gospel. Goff recalls a time she spoke with a girl who was in the industry, “This girl stepped out from the curtains in her robe in between clients. I could see the pain in her eyes. It was heartbreaking. I want her to know God has a purpose for her.”

Amongst creating hope in a hopeless environment, Valarie also speaks in churches about breaking the cycle of commercial sex trade, partners with other anti-human trafficking organizations, and helps facilitate F.R.E.E. International searches to find missing persons.

By building relationships with those working in the sex industry, Valarie is able to share the message of Christ. Those who are being trafficked desperately need Jesus. Help to answer this need by reaching out to Valarie at valariegoff@usmissions.org or visiting http://freeinternational.org/.
